Disney and Marvel continue to push the box office envelope, with\u00a0Avengers: Infinity\u00a0<\/i>War\u00a0<\/i>delivering up the latest victory.<\/p>\n
Avengers: Infinity War broke both the domestic opening weekend box office record and worldwide opening record with a massive $258 million domestically and $641 million worldwide. In addition,\u00a0Black Panther\u00a0<\/b>improved its position from eighth place last weekend to a spot in this weekend’s top five, truly making this a\u00a0Marvel<\/i>-ous weekend.<\/p>\n
Most impressively, “Infinity War” nabbed the global record without the help of China, the world’s second biggest movie market. The film opens there on May 11.<\/p>\n
Disney now holds 9 of the top 10 biggest openings in North American history.\u00a0Infinity War<\/b>‘s estimated $630 million worldwide opening means the 19 films so far released in the Marvel Cinematic Universe<\/b> have now amassed nearly $15.5 billion combined.<\/p>\n
The mega-hit smashed a number of records in its global debut over the weekend, less than three months after Marvel’s\u00a0Black Panther\u00a0<\/i>began its own historic run.<\/p>\n

Biggest Domestic Opening of All Time<\/strong><\/p>\n Avengers: Infinity War<\/em> earned $258 million in its first weekend, besting fellow Disney title\u00a0Star Wars: The Force Awakens<\/em> ($248 million).<\/p>\n Biggest Worldwide Opening of All Time\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n The tentpole debuted to $383 million overseas for a global blastoff of $641 million \u2014 nearly $100 million more than the previous record holder, Universal’s The Fate of the Furious<\/em> ($541.9 million).<\/p>\n Thanks to a day-and-date debut in China \u2014 where Infinity War<\/em> doesn’t open until May 11 \u2014 Fate of the Furious<\/em> still boasts the top international opening with $443.2 million (which included $184.9 million from the Middle Kingdom). Infinity War <\/em>ranks as the No. 2 foreign bow of all time.<\/p>\n Biggest Superhero Opening of All Time<\/strong><\/p>\n Marvel’s The Avengers<\/em> was the previous record holder for top superhero launch in North America ($207.4 million), while Warner Bros. and DC’s Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice<\/em> ($422.5 million) held the global crown.<\/p>\n Biggest Saturday of All Time in North America<\/strong><\/p>\n Fueled by word of mouth, Infinity War <\/em>took in $83 million on Saturday, well ahead of the previous record holder, Universal’s Jurassic World<\/em> ($69.6 million). The latter had the advantage of opening in the heart of summer, when kids were out of school.<\/p>\n Infinity War<\/em>‘s Friday haul was $106 million, the second-best showing ever behind Force Awakens<\/em> ($119.1 million).<\/p>\n Biggest Sunday of All Time in North <\/strong>America<\/strong><\/p>\n A final Sunday figure won’t be released until Monday morning, but estimates show Infinity War <\/em>earning $61 million, narrowly beating Force Awakens<\/em> ($60 million).<\/p>\n Biggest Opening of All Time in Numerous Markets<\/strong><\/p>\n Infinity War<\/em> scored the highest debut ever in South Korea ($39.2 million), Mexico ($25.1 million), Brazil ($18.8 million), the Philippines ($12.5 million), Thailand ($10 million), Indonesia ($9.6 million) and Malaysia ($8.4 million). In India ($18.6 million), it was the biggest bow for a Western title ever and has already surpassed the entire runs of The Avengers, Avengers: Age of Ultron<\/em> and Captain America: Civil War<\/em>.
