The Supermen You Never Saw

June 14, 2013

superman illustrationTo celebrate today’s  release of  “The Man of Steel,”  we would like to share  some Superman movie trivia with you.

Superman’s history has been plagued with development hell so many times that a graveyard of actors can now claim that they were almost able to leap buildings in a single bound. And that’s not to say that Christopher Reeve got his big break easy, either! The truth is that almost every leading man in the 1970s was considered for the role. The same goes for the 1990s and 2000s.

Here is the handful of eclectic casting choices that almost were and nearly could have been.

DUSTIN HOFFMAN

ROBERT REDFORD

BURT REYNOLDS

BRUCE JENNER

HARRISON FORD

NICOLAS CAGE

CHRISTIAN BALE

D.J. COTRONA

JOE MANGANIELLO

…And our favorite actor that never got the chance to don the blue tights – SYLVESTER STALLONE!

Two years before Superman was released, Rocky catapulted Sylvester Stallone into worldwide fame. Apparently the Italian Stallion screen-tested for the role, though he was deemed “too ethnic.” Other reports claim that Marlon Brando, who was paid a world record $3.7 million for two weeks of work on the picture, refused to let a rising star such as Stallone overshadow him.

Thus, we never got to hear, “Yo Lois, I can fly!”

20 Feet From Stardom a must see film!

June 13, 2013

StardomIf you would like to branch out from the onslaught of summer movies filled with special effects and superheroes, we would like to suggest “Twenty Feet of Stardom”

In this film, award-winning director Morgan Neville shines a spotlight on the untold true story of the  backup singers, the unsung heroes  behind some of the greatest musical legends of the 21st century. Along with rare archival footage and a peerless soundtrack, TWENTY FEET FROM STARDOM boasts intimate interviews with Bruce Springsteen, Stevie Wonder, Mick Jagger and Sting to name just a few. However, these world-famous figures take a backseat to the diverse array of backup singers—including Darlene Love, Merry Clayton, Claudia Lennear, Lisa Fischer, and Judith Hill—whose lives and stories take center stage in the film.

The movie opens this Friday in L.A. and New York and across the country later this summer. Watch for it in a theater near you. You won’t be disappointed!

  • Grey’s Anatomy, Once Upon a Time, and Scandal will likely find their seasons split in two, with approximately 12-episode runs this fall, followed by a hiatus in the winter (when new shows will premiere in their time slots) and then a return in the spring.

2013-2014 Schedules

ABC is trying something new on Tuesday nights. Make that many somethings new: the entire night will consist of first-year shows, led off by ABC’s splashiest new series, Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. The all-new Tuesday is made possible by a format change to Dancing with the Stars, where results will now be revealed immediately as part of the show’s once-a-week, two-hour Monday broadcast. Otherwise, the schedule is fairly stable, with the network attempting to break in yet another new drama at Sundays at 10p, while it will use The Middleand Modern Family as lead-ins to new comedies on Wednesdays in an attempt to finally find a half-hour that sticks. Those new comedies mean that the return of Suburgatory will be held back until midseason, as will the launch of five new shows. The Neighbors is the only returning show moving to a new night, and the shift to a less-demanding Friday slot could actually work in the show’s favor.
